The United States Supreme Court has upheld President Trump's travel ban aimed towards people from several Muslim-majority countries.

Chief Justice John Roberts, who had penned the ruling, stated that the immigration restriction enforced by the Trump administration fell within the president's authority. The court also rejected the claims that the ban was motivated by religious resentment.

The lower courts had declared the ban unconstitutional but the decision was reversed in a 5-4 majority ruling. The ban, announced in September, prohibits most people from Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia and Yemen from entering the US. It also imposes limited sanctions against North Korea and Venezuela.

President Trump accepted the court's ruling and soon after the verdict tweeted, "SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS TRUMP TRAVEL BAN. Wow!"
