Meet Zohran Mamdani, The Indian-Origin Democratic Nominee For US Mayor Poll
Zohran Mamdani, the son of celebrated Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair, has won the Democratic nomination for Mayor of New York City, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in a closely contested primary.
Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic Socialist and sitting New York State Assembly member, emerged as the clear winner with more than 80 percent of ballots counted. His campaign, built on housing justice, immigrant rights, and grassroots mobilization, resonated strongly with voters across the five boroughs.
In his concession speech, Cuomo acknowledged Mamdani’s victory, saying, “Mamdani won, and we are going to take a look and make some decisions. Tonight is his night.”
With this win, Mamdani is now poised to become New York City’s first Muslim and first Indian-American mayor, if he triumphs in the general election.
The victory is being hailed as a landmark moment for political diversity in the U.S. Prominent journalist Rajdeep Sardesai posted on X (formerly Twitter), “A result to show that even in Trumpland, there is still space for social and political diversity above all else!”
Cuomo had attempted a political comeback following his 2021 resignation amid sexual harassment allegations. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams did not contest the Democratic primary and is running as an independent.
