A man has been arrested from Assam's Hojai district for hiding his religious identity to marry a Hindu woman. The man, who is Muslim by faith, was arrested based on complaints of his wife, a police officer said.

The woman lodged a written complaint with the help of District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) of Hojai, to the superintendent of police, against her husband, S K Sarma, officer-in-charge (OC), Lumding police station told reporters.

The woman, who hails from Dhemaji, said she came in contact with the man when both used to work in Tamil Nadu. She claimed that the man, who is from Nakhuti's 2 Sarke Basti area under Lumding police station, hid his religious identity and married her as a Hindu. After marriage, he started torturing her both physically and mentally.

A few months later, the man took a large sum of money and fled to Assam's Nakhuti area from Tamil Nadu. Upon following him back to Assam's Hojai, after the man did not contact her, the woman learnt of his true religious identity and other details about him.

Hojai superintendent of police, Barun Purkayastha, sent a team to apprehend the accused on Wednesday. He was arrested the same night and produced at a local court in Hojai on Thursday.

The OC of Lumding PS said that investigations were underway in the case. "It is a case of 'love-jihad' as a man from one faith pretended to be of another to marry a woman", he said.
