Plantation of Marijuana Mooted In Manipur

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday informed that the government is mooting plantation of Marijuana at selected places for medicinal purposes to check plantation of illegal poppy plants at different areas of the state.

Speaking atthe inaugural function of Horticulture and Soil Conservation office, the ChiefMinister said that the government along with Horticulture department areminutely discussing on the matter and is exploring options "to providelivelihood for those engaged with plantation of poppy plants" by replacingit through growing of horticulture crops.

Reminding that "plantation of Marijuana at selected places for medical purposes has been legalized in some countries." Singh, however, cautioned if growing of illegal poppy in certain districts of the state is not checked at the earliest, it will create many problems in the near future.

The CM alsoexpressed satisfaction that 4000 Metric Tonnes of ginger grown in Pherzawldistrict was exported outside the state recently as well as 150 MT of organicpineapple products.
