The cargo terminal operated by Guwahati International Airport Limited (GIAL) at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) has reported record-breaking growth in cargo movement, both on a daily and monthly scale. On June 28, 2025, the terminal handled 42.43 metric tonnes (MT) of cargo in a single day — the highest ever recorded at the airport — surpassing its previous benchmark of 40.43 MT. This marked a 4.95% increase in single-day handling capacity. The surge in throughput continued through the month, with 844 MT of cargo processed in June, the terminal’s highest monthly figure to date and a robust 11.93% rise from its earlier record of 754 MT in January 2025.

This exceptional growth comes on the back of sustained operational enhancements, improved cargo handling efficiency, and LGBIA’s growing importance in bridging the Northeast with key domestic markets. Over the first quarter of FY2025–26, the airport has shown strong performance in cargo volumes. In year-on-year comparisons, April 2025 saw a 96% growth over April 2024, May clocked an increase of over 90%, and June posted an astonishing 124.93% surge — pointing to a sharply rising trajectory that reflects the airport’s transformation into a logistics powerhouse.

While Guwahati serves as the gateway, the ripple effects are visible across the region. Agartala and Imphal continue to be the leading contributors from the Northeast in outbound cargo, with Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Kolkata forming the key destination corridors. On the import front, the terminal has seen an increase in flower shipments from Bengaluru and Jaipur — a trend that not only reflects improved cold-chain handling but also hints at the emergence of a promising floral trade network in the region.

“These milestones reflect not just operational excellence, but also the economic momentum building across the Northeast,” said a GIAL spokesperson. “The growing cargo movement is a testament to the trust our partners place in us, and to the region’s deeper integration with India’s national supply chains.”

Guwahati International Airport Limited (GIAL) operates the airport under a public-private partnership model, led by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises. The 50-year concession agreement with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) aims to transform LGBIA into a modern, efficient, and well-connected aviation hub for both passenger and cargo services.

Located approximately 26 km from the heart of Guwahati city, LGBIA plays a vital role in serving the entire Northeast region. Named after Assam’s first Chief Minister, the airport has seen rapid infrastructure upgrades in recent years and is increasingly becoming a focal point for trade, travel, and connectivity in this part of the country.
