Sardaarji 3

Diljit Dosanjh’s much-awaited Punjabi horror-comedy Sardaar Ji 3 is set for an exclusive overseas release on June 27, 2025. However, the film will not be screened in India due to strong opposition from film bodies and netizens, primarily over the inclusion of Pakistani actors, particularly Hania Aamir. The decision comes in the wake of the tragic Pahalgam terror attack and growing tensions between India and Pakistan.

Why Sardaar Ji 3 Will Not Release in India

Following the April 2025 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, the Indian entertainment industry, in alignment with government directives, reinforced a ban on collaboration with Pakistani artists. As a result, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) formally requested the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to deny certification to Sardaar Ji 3.

In its letter, FWICE cited recent directives from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B), highlighting national interest and urging a unified stance against cross-border collaborations. The cast of Sardaar Ji 3 includes Pakistani actors such as Hania Aamir, Nasir Chinyoti, Daniel Khawar, and Saleem Albela, triggering objections and ultimately leading the makers to skip the Indian theatrical release altogether.

Plot and Cast: A Ghostbuster’s Tale

Directed by Amar Hundal, Sardaar Ji 3 continues the quirky adventures of a ghost hunter played by Diljit Dosanjh. This installment sees him exorcising spirits from a haunted mansion in the United Kingdom. Joining him in this supernatural mission is Hania Aamir, who plays a fellow ghost hunter. The film mixes elements of horror, satire, romance, and comedy.

Other key cast members include Neeru Bajwa, Manav Vij, Gulshan Grover, and Sapna Pabbi. The romantic subplot features both Neeru and Hania vying for Diljit’s affection, adding a dose of drama to the ghostbusting chaos.

Trailer Controversy and Geo-Blocking in India

On June 22, Diljit shared the trailer of Sardaar Ji 3 on Instagram with the caption:

"Sardaar Ji 3 Releasing 27th June OVERSEAS Only/ FADH LAO BHOOND DIAN LATTAN"

The trailer was uploaded on YouTube but was geo-blocked in India, displaying the message: “The uploader has not made this video available in your country.” While the teaser and film’s songs remain accessible in India, the full trailer—featuring Hania Aamir prominently—remains restricted.

Social Media Backlash and National Sentiment

Netizens have sharply criticised Diljit Dosanjh for casting Hania Aamir in the film amid ongoing India-Pakistan tensions. Several users accused him of being “shameless” and even questioned his patriotism. Some called for his boycott and urged his removal from upcoming projects like Border 2.

One user commented, “Disgusted by him. All the allegations of being a separatist seem true now.” Others pointed out that Diljit remained silent during national crises like the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, hinting at selective activism.

Adding to the controversy, Hania Aamir’s Instagram account was reportedly blocked in India after her alleged anti-India remarks surfaced in April.

Ironical Take on Ghostbusting

Despite the surrounding controversy, Sardaar Ji 3 promises to be a humorous take on paranormal investigations. The teaser introduces a haunted UK castle where soldiers fail to contain a powerful spirit. The desperate mansion owner calls in Diljit’s character, who responds with his usual witty flair.

The film's comedic tone is evident as scenes show his humorous banter with a trio of live-in witches, who demand everything from medical kits to makeup boxes. The trailer ends with Diljit mock-chiding the ghost for not addressing him respectfully:

“Tainu Sardaar keh ke bulauna chahida si… Jii vi nahi lagaya!”

Sardaar Ji 3 was poised to be another feather in Diljit Dosanjh’s cap, blending horror and humour with a multicultural cast. However, political tensions and industry-wide regulations have resulted in the film being barred from Indian cinemas. As it now gears up for its overseas release, the controversy surrounding its cast and the socio-political climate continues to spark debate.

Whether this decision impacts Diljit’s image in India or affects the film’s success globally remains to be seen. What’s clear is that Sardaar Ji 3 is more than just a movie—it’s at the centre of a cultural and political storm.
