Reception and Critical Response
Maharani received mixed reviews upon its theatrical release in November 2023. While the cast’s performance—particularly the chemistry between Shine Tom Chacko and Roshan Mathew—was praised, critics pointed out issues with character development and tone. Some viewers also flagged the film’s treatment of certain subjects, calling out moments of casual misogyny and lack of depth.
ETimes gave the film a 2-star rating, noting:
“Roshan and Shine try hard to play young men who are loveable, despite their tendency to discard one girl for another… Ultimately, it feels strange that the filmmakers thought this story was worth the effort.”
However, for viewers who enjoy slice-of-life dramas laced with humour and emotional storytelling, Maharani may still prove to be a decent one-time watch—especially now that it's easily accessible on OTT.
While Maharani may not have wowed critics or cinema-goers, its OTT release offers a second chance for audiences to engage with a story of friendship, village rivalry, and familial bonds. Backed by a strong ensemble cast and rooted in rural Kerala’s social dynamics, the film can be a good pick for fans of grounded Malayalam cinema.
