City’s Newest Flyover Aims to Unclog the Dispur–Six Mile Bottleneck

Guwahati is all set to get a major infrastructure boost today as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will inaugurate the much-anticipated Rukminigaon flyover — a sleek, 650-metre stretch that promises to ease some of the worst traffic snarls the city has come to endure.

For years, commuters traveling between Dispur and Six Mile have had to brave bumper-to-bumper traffic, especially during rush hours. The Rukminigaon junction, once a notorious chokepoint, might finally breathe a little easier with the opening of this new flyover.

Constructed in record time — just nine months — the project is a testament to fast-tracked urban development in Assam. Work began in October 2024, and today, the ₹111-crore project stands ready to be rolled out for public use. The main construction itself cost around ₹88 crore, with the remainder allocated for finishing touches and allied infrastructure.

What sets this flyover apart is not just its speed of execution but its strategic positioning. By connecting two of Guwahati’s busiest zones — Dispur and Six Mile — it is expected to drastically reduce congestion not only in Rukminigaon but also in high-traffic zones like Ganeshguri and Beltola.

“The city is growing, and so must its roads. This is not just a flyover — it's a promise of smoother mornings and faster evenings for our citizens,” Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said ahead of the formal opening.

In a move to root the project in the region’s cultural identity, the Chief Minister also announced that the flyover will be named after the legendary king of ancient Kamarupa — Bhagadatta. The Rukminigaon structure will be called Bhagadatta-I, while another flyover currently under construction at the Supermarket will be named Bhagadatta-II.

The city’s skyline is steadily transforming with an increasing number of flyovers, underpasses, and corridors — and today’s inauguration is another step toward a faster, more mobile Guwahati. For the thousands who’ve long endured traffic jams at Rukminigaon, relief is finally just a flyover away.
