Bringing much-awaited relief to commuters in Guwahati city, the newly built Rukminigaon flyover is set to be inaugurated tomorrow (July 6, 2025). Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will formally inaugurate the flyover, further expanding the city's growing network of overpasses.
Spanning approximately 650 metres, the Rukminigaon flyover is expected to significantly decongest one of the city's busiest thoroughfares. It will serve as a vital link between Dispur and Six Mile, providing daily relief to thousands of commuters who often grapple with long delays during peak traffic hours.
Constructed at an estimated cost of around Rs 111 crore, the project was executed with remarkable speed. Work began in October 2024, and the entire structure was completed in just nine months, something that can be considered as a rare feat.
The original construction contract was valued at Rs 88 crore, with the remaining expenses covering final touches and related works.
For months, residents around Rukminigaon witnessed a flurry of activity, as construction teams worked round the clock to meet the government's target. With final touches now nearing completion, the flyover is ready to be opened to the public, offering smoother transit through what was once a major traffic bottleneck.
Beyond easing congestion at Rukminigaon itself, the flyover is also expected to reduce pressure on key adjoining intersections, including Ganesguri and the stretch leading towards Beltola, which have long been plagued by daily traffic snarls.
However, the project has not come without controversy. As part of the construction process, several roadside trees in the Rukminigaon area were chopped down to make way for the flyover. The tree felling, carried out by the administration, had sparked concerns among environmentalists and nature lovers. Many criticised the move, pointing out that it added to the rapid loss of green cover in the city.
Despite public outcry at the time, the project went ahead as planned.
