From Neglect to National Recognition—What Changed for Guwahati?
In a significant recognition of its improved urban sanitation and cleanliness efforts, Guwahati has been conferred the “Promising Swachh Shehar Award” under the 3 to 10 lakh population category at the Swachh Survekshan 2024 awards ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on Thursday.
The city achieved an impressive national rank of 44, marking a remarkable jump from its previous position of 402, reflecting sustained civic improvements and active citizen participation.
Guwahati also received ODF+ (Open Defecation Free Plus) certification and earned a One-Star rating under the Garbage Free City (GFC) framework, further cementing its progress under the Swachh Bharat Mission.
Receiving the award on behalf of the city, Mayor Mrigen Sarania of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) attributed the achievement to the collective commitment of Guwahati’s residents and municipal teams. “These honours are not just a recognition of efforts—they are a testament to the dedication, community spirit, and civic responsibility of our citizens,” he said at the event.
The Mayor also extended heartfelt congratulations to all city residents and acknowledged the role of GMC officials and staff. “From awareness campaigns to sanitation drives, every step taken by the people of Guwahati has contributed to this national recognition,” he noted.
Expressing gratitude to the Government of India and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Sarania said the award signifies not only recognition but also inspiration. “This is not merely an accolade, but a renewed motivation to build a cleaner, greener, and more inclusive Guwahati,” he added.
The Swachh Survekshan awards are part of the central government’s annual cleanliness survey to assess urban areas based on sanitation, hygiene, solid waste management, and citizen feedback. The 2024 edition covered over 4,300 cities and towns across India.
The Mayor reiterated the city’s commitment to further progress, quoting the campaign’s guiding slogan: “Guwahati Aamar, Daityo Aamar” (Guwahati is ours, the responsibility is ours). “Let us continue this journey of transformation together and work toward a future where Guwahati ranks among the cleanest cities of India,” he urged.
