Visitors’ Bag with Cash, Documents Stolen from Assam State Zoo Locker

In a serious breach of security, a family visiting the Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden in Guwahati fell victim to theft after their belongings were stolen from a locker inside the zoo premises—right under the watch of security personnel.

The incident reportedly took place during a recent visit, when a family from Silapathar had travelled to Guwahati with their child during the summer holidays. Hoping to keep their valuables safe, they stored their bag in one of the zoo’s public lockers before exploring the premises. However, to their shock, the bag was stolen in broad daylight.

According to the victims, the stolen bag contained several thousand rupees in cash along with important personal documents. What is even more alarming is that the theft occurred while security guards were reportedly on duty nearby.

Following the incident, the family immediately approached both the zoo authorities and local police seeking assistance and action. A formal complaint has been lodged.

Crucially, the entire act of theft was captured on the zoo’s CCTV cameras. Footage clearly shows an unidentified individual accessing the locker area and making away with the bag, indicating a well-planned and swift operation.

This incident has raised serious questions about the safety of visitor belongings within the zoo, especially in facilities meant to provide secure storage. The victims have urged authorities to not only track down the thief using the CCTV evidence but also to strengthen overall security protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.

As of now, police are examining the CCTV footage and have initiated an investigation. Zoo officials have not issued a formal statement yet, but internal discussions regarding the breach are reportedly underway.
