In a bid to enhance airfield safety and foster stronger ties with the local community, Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI) recently organised a wildlife hazard awareness programme at Agshia village in Borjhar, on the outskirts of Guwahati.
The session, led by the airport’s Wildlife Hazard Management and Safety teams, focused on educating residents about the risks posed by common yet often overlooked threats—namely dead animals and stray cattle. Such waste and unattended livestock in the airport's vicinity can attract scavenging birds, increasing the chances of bird strikes, a major concern for aircraft safety.
Residents were sensitised on the importance of keeping the surrounding areas clean and free of attractants, and were also briefed on how they can contribute to safer skies through responsible practices. The session further covered how locals can apply for No Objection Certificates (NOC) related to the permissible height of buildings and structures near the airport, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
The initiative is part of LGBIA’s broader community outreach and aviation safety programme. Officials said that collaboration with local residents is vital in mitigating wildlife hazards, especially in semi-rural areas bordering the airport.
