Traffic Curbs Announced in Guwahati to Manage Ambubachi Mela Rush

In view of the upcoming Ambubachi Mela at the revered Maa Kamakhya Temple, scheduled to be held from June 22 to June 25, 2025, the Guwahati Traffic Police has issued a comprehensive set of traffic restrictions and advisories aimed at ensuring the safety and convenience of pilgrims, vulnerable road users, and the general public, as well as facilitating uninterrupted movement for emergency vehicles.

To maintain order and safety during the religious congregation, vehicular movement towards the Kamakhya Temple from the foothill area will be strictly regulated. Only vehicles possessing valid Car Passes (Ferry Car) issued by the District Administration will be permitted to ascend towards the temple. However, this restriction will not apply to emergency vehicles such as ambulances, fire tenders, and those transporting life-saving medicines or oxygen cylinders. Furthermore, even for pass-holding vehicles, movement towards the temple will be curtailed between 5 PM and 10 PM throughout the event period.

The traffic plan has also designated the Pandu Port Road, previously used for ferry car movement, as a contingency route to be reserved solely for emergency use. Pilgrimage-bound vehicles approaching from the Jalukbari side will be diverted to use the service lane of the Nilachal Flyover, where they will drop pilgrims opposite Gate No. 3 of the NF Railway Headquarters before proceeding to designated parking areas at Adabari Bus Stand and Boripara Field. Similarly, vehicles from the Bharalumukh side will use the service lane to drop passengers near Swagat Hospital (Railway Gate No. 4) and then proceed towards the same parking zones.

In an effort to decongest the service lanes, ASTC buses, city buses, and private vehicles have been directed to use the main stretch of the Nilachal Flyover between Jalukbari Rotary and Machkhowa. City buses from the Jalukbari side will drop passengers at either Boripara Police Point or Biswakarma Mandir, while those coming from Bharalumukh will drop passengers near the Taxi Stand or the opposite side of Boripara Police Point. No passenger drop-offs will be permitted on either end of the Nilachal Flyover.

Parking arrangements for devotees’ two-wheelers and light or heavy motor vehicles have been allocated at specific sites, including Adabari Bus Stand, Boripara Field, ASTC Machkhowa, and Sonaram High School Field. In contrast, the entire stretch beneath the Nilachal Flyover has been declared a restricted parking zone. Roadside parking has been prohibited on several key stretches, including Pandu Port Road, Borbazar Road, the Elevator Corridor at Bharalumukh, D.G. Road, and on the Nilachal Flyover itself.

Movement of commercial goods vehicles—including those with three wheels or more—and slow-moving carts will be restricted from Jalukbari Rotary to Machkhowa on DG Road, MG Road, and AT Road between 5 AM and 11 PM during the event. The same restriction applies to Pandu Port Road from Adabari Tiniali and to Borbazar Road from Maligaon Chariali to Pandu Port.

Additionally, all inter-district and long-distance buses, including those operated by ASTC, will not be permitted to ply on D.G. Road, M.G. Road, and A.T. Road during the event. Buses ferrying devotees from Kamakhya Railway Junction will use PNGB Road, D.G. Road, Adabari Tiniali, and Pandu Port Road to reach their temporary rest camps at Pandu Port. Likewise, vehicles coming from rest camps at Pandu Port and Kamakhya Railway Junction will access the Kamakhya Temple via the service lane of Nilachal Flyover.

In the interest of public safety and smooth traffic flow, no heavy vehicle will be allowed to travel from NH-27 towards Gosala via Tetelia. Authorities have urged travellers heading to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport to plan their journey in advance and use NH-27 to avoid congestion and delays.
