British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been moved intointensive care at St. Thomas' Hospital in London after days of persistentsymptoms, including a fever and a cough.

Johnson was admitted to the hospital on Sunday after testingpositive for COVID-19 on March 26. Initially, officials said the Prime Minister'scase was not an emergency and that taking him to the hospital was a"precautionary step."

But Downing Street officials said on Monday that the U.K.leader's condition has worsened, the BBC reported.

"Over the course of this afternoon, the condition ofthe prime minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he hasbeen moved to the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital," the statementsaid.

Johnson has asked Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab "to deputize for him where necessary," according to the statement.

In a press briefing earlier on Monday, Raab said 51,608people have tested positive and 5,373 have died. Nearly 18,000 people withcoronavirus symptoms have been admitted into hospitals.

Raab had said that the prime minister had had a"comfortable night in the hospital, and he's in good spirits."
