Today on the 81st death anniversary of Dexabhakta Tarun Ram Phookun, my revered grandfather, I remember few memories of the great Indian leader. He was born in the year 1877. He was a multifaceted personality, a politician, writer, hunter, and a freedom fighter. After completing his graduation he went to London for pursuing law. He returned after being conferred Bar-At- Law and started his practice in Guwahati. When the freedom movement started under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, he gave up his flourishing practice to join the freedom movement.
Mahatma Gandhi came to Assam and stayed in his house at Bharalumukh. Gandhiji along with him performed the" bidexi bostro dah jagya"(burning of foreigngoods). The Congress session at Pandu was convened by Dexabhakta and Late Nabin Bordoloi.
T.R.Phookun was elected president of Axom Xahitya Xabha for his contributions to Assamese literature. Even at such time he wrote a book on sexual hygiene "Jauna Tatwa" and many more like " Mur Sikar Kahini"(his experiences in hunting adventures), " Stuti mala" a book of hymns, "Nigni Bhaworiar Kahini" a book of humorous poems and others. He dedicated his life for freedom of India. Unfortunately, very few recognized and remember his contributions for the freedom of our country. He breathed his last on 28th July 1939 at the age of 62 years. This is just a humble tribute to the Daxabhakta on his death anniversary.
