"Every district must carry out these justice processions"- Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya
The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Thursday rolled out massive “Justice for Zubeen Garg” processions across district headquarters in Assam, as student and civic groups rallied to demand a speedy, transparent investigation into the celebrated singer Zubeen Garg’s death and strict, exemplary punishment for those found responsible.
From Guwahati’s Shaheed Nyas, the AASU-led contingent — described by organisers as a “justice march” — set out for the city, while parallel protest columns were mobilised in every district seat across the state. Several sections of the All Assam Students’ Union and allied bodies joined the demonstrations, turning the campaign into a show of statewide public outrage.
“We will not allow any question over Zubeen Garg’s death to be left unanswered,” Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya, AASU’s chief advisor, told reporters. “Every district must carry out these justice processions. The guilty must be punished with the strictest, exemplary action. The investigation must be accelerated.”
AASU president Utpal Sarma said the student union has been raising serious questions since the day of Zubeen Garg’s passing. “From the very first day we have demanded answers about the unnatural circumstances surrounding his death,” Sharma said. “There can be no room for doubt or negligence. Assam’s people deserve a thorough probe into how this happened, and who — through action or inaction — allowed it to happen.”
The students’ body emphasised the moral dimensions of the protests: the marches, they said, are less about politics and more about accountability and closure for a beloved public figure whose death has left the state “waiting” for answers. Demonstrators carried placards demanding swift forensic scrutiny, independent oversight of the inquiry and protection for whistleblowers or witnesses.
While AASU called for a rapid probe and exemplary punishment, they also urged the state machinery to guarantee that the investigation remains free from political interference. “The people of Assam expect an impartial inquiry that will withstand public scrutiny,” the union added in a statement.
Security arrangements were visible in major towns on Thursday as the processions moved through central thoroughfares. No major disturbances were reported in early hours; organisers said the protests would remain peaceful yet persistent until their demands are met.
Background
Zubeen Garg — widely regarded as one of Assam’s most influential singers — has a vast fan base across the Northeast and beyond. His death has sparked intense emotions in Assam, where public reactions range from grief to mounting suspicion over the circumstances that led to it.
Meanwhile, AASU has vowed to keep the momentum of the justice campaign alive, signalling further mass actions if the state government do not deliver a swift and transparent investigation.
