AASU seeks TDP’s support to block CAB

All Assam Students Union (AASU) leaders met Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday seeking his support for their movement against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 placed in Parliament by NDA government, which will hamper the interests of people of North eastern states.

The delegation comprised AASU President Dipanka Kumar Nath, general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Chief Advisor Dr Samujjal Bhattacharjya and Gauhati University professors Basanta Deka and Shikar Sarma, a release from the Chief Minister's office said.

The delegation members said that the government of India has placed the citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 in Parliament and a joint parliamentary committee is entrusted with interacting with various groups and individuals across the country. The Bill proposes to regularise all the illegal immigrants from Bangladesh into Assam till 2014 on the basis of religion. They said that they opposed the Bill.

The members told the Chief Minister that the Centre tabled the Bill in Parliament and a joint parliamentary committee was later constituted to interact with various groups and individuals across the country.

Promising support to the AASU movement, the Chief Minister said that the Centre should respect the sentiments of the people of Assam. He wondered why the NDA govt was acting against the spirit of national integration. Naidu assured to discuss the matter with the stakeholders and extend support to Assam people.
