AGP lost all three, clings on to NDA

AGP found victory in defeat by siding with NDA in this Tsunami as they lost all the three seats offered to them by the BJP led coalition but kept them afloat as a partner of the NDA.

Despite very strong Modi tsunami, the AGP could not break throughin Koliabor and Barpeta while in Dhubri they were never a serious contender.

The AGP leadership realizing what was to come, already insulated their position by passing several resolutions and formations of committees sidelining the lone dissenter Prafulla Kumar Mahanta.

However, past the brute majority of  NDA, there is every possibility that AGP leadership would now lie low, show no more dissent and lobby for a possible Rajya Sabha ticket for Birendra Prasad Baishya.

The BJP is, however, unlikely to give any seats as most likely the  LJP candidate Rama Vilas Paswan will be sent to Rajya Sabha via Assam. The other seat will surely go to BJP.

In terms of vote share here are the figures,

Dhubri – 23.72%

Barpeta – 34.61%

Kokrajhar – 40.44%

Whatever votes the AGP got was the pro-Modi vote as the AGP's own votes ditched them because of their flip flop on the CAB issue. The closest of the contest was in Barpeta where the margin was  1,40,000.

However a section of the AGP leadership strongly felt thathad the party ditched the alliance, they would have been wilderness after the resultsas NDA completely annihilated others. "We may lose all the three seats butat least we are with NDA and we can come back in the Assembly election. Thereis no chance of any opposition forces at least for next 10 years" said Mr.Kesab Mahanta, the AGP minister defending their decision to rejoin the NDA.
