AGP President Atul Bora Downplays Internal Rift, Calls It a 'Family Matter'

Amid intensifying dissatisfaction among its grassroots workers, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is witnessing an internal churn that threatens to upend its alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. While party president and Assam Cabinet Minister Atul Bora has attempted to play down the unrest, describing it as a “family issue,” the mounting dissent in key districts tells a different story.

“Differences and misunderstandings happen even within a family. This is an internal matter of our party,” Bora said in a guarded response to growing discontent within party ranks. However, political observers view the remarks as a sign of mounting pressure on AGP’s leadership, especially as the party struggles to retain its identity and influence under the dominant shadow of the BJP.

Majuli Unit Breaks Away, Cites ‘Betrayal’

In a major blow to the alliance, the AGP’s Majuli district unit has officially severed ties with the BJP, citing repeated “humiliation and betrayal.” The dramatic decision was taken during an executive meeting in Garamur, where representatives from all 20 regional committees were present.

AGP leaders accused the BJP of consistently sidelining the party in both governance and elections. They singled out BJP MLA Bhuban Gam, accusing him of neglecting local concerns and failing to acknowledge the AGP’s contributions.

Brajen Gam, president of the Majuli AGP unit, announced that he would contest the 2026 Assembly elections independently under the AGP banner, asserting the district’s decision to “end compromise.” The bold move could serve as a catalyst for similar action across other AGP strongholds in Upper Assam.

Bihpuria Uprising: AGP Threatens Independent Candidacy

Further compounding the crisis, the AGP unit in Bihpuria has openly rebelled against the BJP. During a massive workers’ meeting attended by over 3,000 party members from 21 regional committees, the unit unanimously nominated Prof. Makhan Tamuli—a retired academic and respected local figure—as its candidate for the upcoming Assembly elections.

The Bihpuria leadership accused the BJP of repeated betrayal in seat-sharing negotiations, warning of mass resignation and an independent electoral campaign if the seat is once again denied. “We’ve been sidelined for 10 years. This is about dignity and survival,” said senior AGP leader Biren Saikia.

The unit has announced plans to march to AGP’s central office in Ambari after July 15 and submit a memorandum of protest. If their demands are ignored, a sit-in demonstration will follow. Party workers accused the BJP of attempting to erase AGP’s existence by systematically denying it stronghold constituencies like Bihpuria.

Leadership Under Pressure

While Atul Bora’s remarks aim to contain the fallout, the scale and coordination of the dissent—across Majuli and Bihpuria—suggest that a deeper crisis is unfolding within the AGP. Senior leaders have so far remained tight-lipped about the developments, but the growing assertiveness among district units signals a pushback against the alliance’s asymmetry and the perceived dilution of AGP’s regional identity.

With civic polls and the 2026 state elections looming, the AGP’s leadership now faces a critical test. Whether it can quell the rebellion and renegotiate its standing within the NDA fold, or whether a larger rupture is on the horizon, remains to be seen.

What is clear, however, is that the AGP’s “family matter” is rapidly spilling into the public domain—and reshaping the political calculus in Assam.
