Breaking: AGP Snaps Ties With BJP in Majuli, Will Go Solo in 2026
In a significant political development, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Majuli district unit has officially severed ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), citing repeated humiliation and betrayal by its ally. The decision was taken during an executive meeting held at the party’s district office in Garamur, Majuli.
Representatives from all 20 regional committees of the district were present at the meeting, which marked a turning point in the AGP’s future electoral strategy. Amid growing discontent, party leaders accused the BJP of consistently sidelining AGP in both governance and electoral considerations. "They did not even offer us basic respect," a party insider said. "The BJP sees us through the eyes of indifference."
The district leadership openly criticised sitting Majuli BJP MLA Bhuban Gam, accusing him of neglecting the interests of both the constituency and the AGP. The district committee further alleged that the BJP had deceived AGP even during the recent panchayat elections, reducing them to a secondary role in local governance.
Declaring that the era of compromise is over, the AGP announced its decision to contest the upcoming 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections independently, under its symbol, the elephant. In a bold move, Majuli district AGP president Brajen Gam formally announced his candidacy for the Majuli constituency in the 2026 elections during the same meeting.
With this declaration, the AGP Majuli unit has drawn a clear line, signalling its intention to reclaim political space and identity apart from its former ally. The fallout could have ripple effects across Upper Assam, where AGP still retains pockets of loyal support.
