Assam CM Orders Probe in Joshita Case, Rolls Out Digital Arms License System

Amid widespread public outrage and ongoing controversies across Assam over the death of Assistant Engineer Joshita Das, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday addressed the issue during a post-Cabinet press briefing in Dibrugarh.

Responding to a journalist’s question, CM Sarma confirmed that the government is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the suicide of the young PWD engineer, who was found dead in a rented house in Bongaigaon. He stated that a team of engineers has been sent to inspect the construction site of the MIN Stadium at Borsojgaon under the Gossaigaon constituency—a project allegedly linked to the pressure Joshita may have faced.

“We are probing the matter thoroughly to understand what actually happened,” said the Chief Minister. “An engineering team is examining whether any work was carried out, whether bills were appropriately raised, and whether Joshita was officially responsible for the project. Payments must reflect the actual work completed. The inspection will help us gather the necessary evidence," he added.

CM Sarma further informed that one engineer and a Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) have already been arrested in connection with the case, underscoring the government’s commitment to act decisively if any misconduct or undue pressure is found.

The tragic death of Joshita Das has sparked widespread protests and condemnation, with student bodies, opposition parties, and civil society organizations demanding a fair and transparent probe. Many have also called for reforms in departmental functioning and greater safeguards for junior engineers, who often bear the brunt of systemic pressures.

Arms Portal to be Launched for Indigenous Citizens

Meanwhile, addressing questions regarding the state government's proposed online portal for arms license applications—aimed at enhancing the security of indigenous citizens—CM Sarma said the portal is scheduled to be launched between August 1 and August 7, subject to his availability.

“Anyone in need of a licensed firearm will be able to apply through the portal. Applications will be scrutinized by the respective District Commissioners, who will then decide whether to grant the license,” he said.

The Chief Minister clarified that citizens can still apply for firearm licenses through offline methods even before the portal goes live.

“There is no restriction on applying. People can still file applications on paper. The portal is simply being introduced to streamline the process,” he added.

He also emphasized that the move is not unprecedented. “A significant number of people in Assam already possess licensed firearms. This isn’t something new—we are just making it easier for those who feel vulnerable,” Sarma said.
