A suicide case has rocked Assam- the suicide of Joshita Das, a junior PWD engineer who was found hanging in her rented apartment at Barpara, Bongaigaon. In the wake of this incident, some pressing questions have emerged.
Joshita’s family has raised serious suspicions regarding both her alleged suicide and the contents of the suicide note. They have outright rejected the possibility that she took her own life. Her mother has publicly claimed that Joshita did not even know how to tie a knot, casting doubt on the likelihood of her taking such a drastic step without external provocation. “She had been seeking an immediate transfer, but the department took no action,” her mother said, while demanding a thorough and impartial investigation.
The incident came to light late Tuesday after her mother, unable to reach her over the phone, alerted the landlord. According to sources, the landlord knocked repeatedly on Joshita’s door but received no response. Alarmed, he was soon joined by two of her colleagues, who forcibly broke the lock and discovered Joshita’s lifeless body inside. The incident was first reported to her mother, who then informed the Bongaigaon Police. The police subsequently took charge of the investigation.
A suicide note recovered from the scene has intensified suspicions. In it, Joshita allegedly named two senior engineers, accusing them of mentally harassing and coercing her into approving a contractor’s bill that she had flagged for procedural irregularities. The note details her anguish, stating she was under immense pressure and felt mentally cornered.
The young engineer’s body was taken to the Navagraha crematorium, where her final rites were performed.
Meanwhile, police officials have stated that they are examining all angles, including the authenticity of the suicide note and the possible role of departmental pressure in Joshita’s death. After the FIR was filed at the Bongaigaon Police Station, the accused, Executive Engineer Dinesh Sarmah Medhi and SDO Aminul Islam, were arrested last night.
The incident has once again cast a spotlight on toxic work environments and the psychological toll it takes on young professionals, especially women in government service.
