Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has launched a scathing attack on the Assam government over its ongoing eviction drives, alleging that the real motive behind the operations is to hand over vast stretches of land to corporate giants like Adani and Ambani, and not to safeguard indigenous rights as claimed.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Akhil Gogoi said the government was "pushing both minority and indigenous communities out of their land" under the guise of protecting ‘jati-mati-bheti’ (identity, land and base).

Gogoi said, “The eviction is not just anti-minority, it is also blatantly anti-indigenous. Initially, they evicted indigenous tribal communities in the name of protecting Assamese land. Now, when those communities hit the streets, the government shifted its focus to evicting minorities, all for political mileage.”

Releasing data during the press conference, Akhil Gogoi claimed that the government is allegedly preparing to allot 50,837 bighas of land to corporate entities by evicting indigenous people. Of this, 6,500 bighas belong to people from minority communities, he added.

"The government is creating colonial enclaves through these evictions and is planning to hand over land to Adani and Ambani. This is not development. This is exploitation," Gogoi asserted.

He further alleged that over 1,200 indigenous residents were evicted from Silsaako area in Guwahati, while another 1,000 people were forced out from the Amchang area.

“This is a sinister ploy to mask the eviction of indigenous people by now targeting minorities,” Gogoi said. “This regime was elected with the votes of Assam’s indigenous people, and now it is selling the land and its resources to outside corporate houses.”

He also claimed that the state government has a hidden agenda of handing over Assam’s mineral resources to big business houses, accusing it of functioning like an agent of corporate interests.

Calling the evictions part of a larger plan to polarize voters and suppress dissent, Gogoi demanded an immediate halt to what he termed a "corporate land grab and divisive politics."

“If there are illegal Bangladeshis, identify them through a legal and transparent mechanism. But don’t use the bogey of infiltration to evict indigenous or minority communities and hand over their land to corporates,” Gogoi said, urging the government to stop weaponizing eviction as a tool of political and economic domination.
