Akhil Gogoi Declares Rahul Chetry As The Margherita Candidate Against BJP

Raijor Dal chief and Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, who arrived in Margherita on Saturday, announced youth leader Raju Chetry as the party’s official candidate for the constituency in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

In a fiery public address, Gogoi launched a scathing attack on the sitting BJP MLA Bhaskar Sarma, accusing him of rampant corruption and a complete lack of accountability. “The current MLA does nothing for the people. He is corrupt, unaccountable, and more of a gambler than a public representative,” Gogoi alleged, drawing loud cheers from the crowd.

Highlighting the credentials of their chosen candidate, Gogoi said, “Raju Chetry is one of our most deserving youth leaders. He was also the General Secretary of the Dibrugarh University Students’ Union. We are confident he will bring real change to Margherita.”

Gogoi further revealed that Raijor Dal had already been actively working in the constituency under the leadership of Rupam Ghosh. “After months of groundwork, we’ve decided to formally field Raju Chetry. We have taken an oath with the people of Margherita, we will defeat the BJP and Bhaskar Sarma,” he declared.

Outlining the party's four-point agenda for the region, Gogoi promised concrete reforms if elected:

  1. Land Patta for All: "Most people here lack legal land rights. We will ensure every resident, especially indigenous communities, receives their rightful land pattas.”

  2. Fair Wages for Tea Garden Workers: “We will guarantee fair, dignified wages for tea workers who have been underpaid for too long.”

  3. Year-Round Irrigation Support: “Every farmer in Margherita will get access to water for cultivation throughout the year.”

  4. Village-Based Employment Opportunities: “We’ll set up small-scale industries in every village so our youth don’t have to migrate to Bengaluru for menial jobs. They will work and thrive here, in their own land.”

Concluding his address, Gogoi said, “The people of Margherita are ready for change. We are ready to deliver it.”

Margherita, a key constituency in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district, has long remained under BJP control. But with Raijor Dal entering the fray with an energised youth candidate and a sharp grassroots agenda, the 2026 battle promises to be a high-stakes political showdown.
