In a major step towards resolving the long-standing border dispute between Assam and Meghalaya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two states in 2022. Taking to the social media platform 'X' on Friday, CM Sarma shared that the agreement is now translating into on-ground action, with boundary pillars being erected in previously disputed areas.

Highlighting the importance of this development, CM Sarma stated, "So, how do these pillars improve harmony between the sister states? People and administration on both sides now have clarity on jurisdiction. Governance can finally shine in these once grey areas."

The Assam-Meghalaya boundary dispute dates back to 1972, when Meghalaya was carved out of Assam. Since then, ambiguity over several stretches of the interstate border has led to tensions, administrative confusion, and at times, clashes between communities.

Recalling the genesis of the issue and the progress made, CM Sarma said, "In 1972, when Meghalaya was carved out, a significant portion of its boundary with Assam was left ambiguous, often leading to chaos and tension between our states. 50 years later, in 2022, under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi and in the presence of HM Amit Shah, our two states signed a historic MoU to begin defining our boundaries. 6/12 disputed areas have been resolved and earmarked for boundary works, and the fruits of that agreement are now flowing in as the first pillars get erected."

The MoU, signed in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, marked a major breakthrough in the decades-old interstate boundary issue. It addressed six out of the twelve areas of difference between the two northeastern states and laid the groundwork for peaceful resolution through mutual understanding and cooperation.
