House Destroyed by the Elephants

A tragic incident of human–elephant conflict claimed the lives of a mother and her son after a herd of wild elephants attacked their home at a tea garden in Assam’s Tinsukia district late on Friday night.

The incident took place at Brahmajan Tea Garden in the Pengree area under the Doomdooma Forest Division around midnight on March 6. A herd of elephants entered the labour lines of the tea estate, creating panic among residents.

During the sudden intrusion, the elephants reportedly attacked the house of tea garden workers Budhan Rautia (50) and his elderly mother Anita Rautia (70). The animals damaged the house and trampled the two inside, killing them on the spot.

Residents said the herd had strayed into the tea garden area late at night and began moving through the labour quarters, damaging several structures and property. Many families ran out of their homes in fear as the elephants roamed through the area.

Local villagers and tea garden workers claimed that the elephants had been moving through nearby areas for several days, spreading fear among residents. They alleged that the situation had been reported earlier, but no strong preventive measures were taken.
