In a major development in rescuing local Indian mongrel dogs, Assam Police in Jorhat has rescued 24 canines that were illegally caged from the Chaguri area.

In this connection, one Doku Doley has been arrested. Reports have also stated that three other persons have been detained. Interrogation is underway.

Meanwhile, a local NGO in Jorhat has sheltered the dogs.

Jorhat Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mamoni Hazarika said to ANI that the local dogs in Jorhat were being illegally smuggled to Nagaland. The dogs were tied with ropes and sacks.

Reports have also mentioned that the smuggling took place ahead of Christmas and New Year's celebrations.

Special Director General of Police GP Singh lauding the efforts of Jorhat Police as "great work" said, "We should be the voice of those who can't express themselves with words".
