Beef Crackdown in South Kamrup: Hotels Raided, Meat Seized
In a coordinated operation, police teams from Palashbari and Bijoynagar launched a crackdown on the illegal sale of banned beef products in the Bijaynagar area of South Kamrup. The raids, conducted late Sunday evening, targeted four roadside hotels operating along National Highway 17.
The hotels raided include Madina Hotel, Bismillah Hotel, Ali Hotel, and Rizwan Hotel. During the operation, police recovered a significant quantity of prohibited beef from the premises of Ali Hotel and Rizwan Hotel. The owners of Madina and Bismillah Hotels reportedly fled the scene upon learning of the raids, evading detention.
Police have taken two individuals into custody in connection with the case. The detainees have been identified as Shafique Ali and Aminur Rahman. Both are suspected to be directly involved in the procurement and sale of the banned meat products.
According to police sources, the hotels had been operating for several years along the busy stretch of NH-17 and were allegedly engaged in the clandestine trade of beef, which is prohibited under state law. Authorities stated that the crackdown was part of an ongoing effort to curb the illegal meat trade and enforce food safety and animal protection regulations.
“We had received specific inputs regarding the sale of banned beef at these establishments. Based on that, we launched a joint operation, which led to the seizure and detentions,” said a senior police official involved in the raid.
Samples of the seized meat have been sent for forensic testing to confirm the nature of the substance. Further legal action will be initiated based on the test results and evidence gathered.
Meanwhile, in Guwahati’s Satgaon locality, police conducted a similar raid on a local hotel, seizing a quantity of banned beef. One individual, identified as Wajidur Rahman, was detained on the spot.
The incident has sparked fresh debate over the enforcement of food laws in Assam, where the sale of beef is a sensitive issue tied closely to religious and cultural sentiments.
