A group of miscreants robbed the temple and looted several ritual bells from the temple. Situated at Bordubi, the Tilinga mandir is a famous Shiva temple in upper Assam. Tilinga means 'bell' in Assamese. The temple is nearly half a century old.

Police meanwhile, acting on a tip off, detained two thieves along with the ritual bells. The detainees were identified as Saminur Rahman of Golakganj and Salam Ali of Nagaon.

"Investigations are on," said a senior police official.
