Buffalo fights in Assam despite SC ban

The people in Gumutha under Nagaon district and in Ahotguri under Morigaon organised traditional buffalo fights to celebrate Magh Bihu, acting against a Supreme Court ban.

"Our farmers believe that insects enter the forehead of buffaloes in this season and disturb them. The insects die once a buffalo fights. These animals are made to fight so that they can let off steam. Otherwise, they may attack anybody at any time," said an organiser of Gumutha buffalo fights.

In Ahotguri, around 15 buffaloes take part in the buffalo fight competition.

Traditional sports, including fights between buffaloes, cocks and bulbuls have been the highlights of Magh Bihu, but 2014's Supreme Court ban on such activities had cast a pall of uncertainty over these celebrations.
