Capped Leak, Uncapped Wounds: ONGC Gas Leak Continues to Haunt Locals

The infamous ONGC gas leak in Bhatiapar was capped by June 27, but the trauma it unleashed continues to haunt the local community. Residents say the incident has left behind more than just environmental damage, it has taken a human toll. The recent death of 68-year-old Kosheshwar Das, allegedly linked to the gas emissions, has brought renewed attention to the suffering endured by the people of the area. Locals now assert that the leak brought them immense misery, and their calls for justice remain unaddressed.

Das, who had been reportedly healthy prior to the incident, suffered a heart attack on June 21 amidst the noxious gas emissions and continuous noise from the rig site. He was rushed to Apeksha Hospital in Dibrugarh, where ONGC had promised to bear the cost of his treatment. However, family members allege that ONGC did not fully fulfil that commitment.

“He was fine before the leak,” said a resident. “Once the gas emissions began, he started having breathing problems. The authorities asked us to temporarily vacate the area, and we complied. But no real help came.”

Das succumbed to his condition on July 14. His body was brought back to Barichuk the following day, triggering anger and protests among residents who blame the gas leak for his death. Locals claim the continuous gas discharge and loud noise not only disrupted daily life but also caused serious health hazards.

Family members expressed further disappointment over ONGC’s role in the treatment. “They said they would take care of everything, but we had to buy medicines ourselves,” said a relative of the deceased. “We want ONGC and SK Petro Services to take full responsibility and compensate his daughter.”

Locals are now demanding that both ONGC and SK Petro Services provide financial compensation to the family and that the government initiate strict punitive action against the rig operators.

While ONGC had acted to control the situation at the time, including shutting down operations and initiating clean-up measures, the episode has left lasting anxiety among residents. The echoes of the leak still linger in their lives, leaving them in a constant state of anxiety.

The community continues to call for justice, stating that this tragedy should serve as a wake-up call for better safety provisions and accountability from energy companies operating in residential areas.
