Assam: Crude Oil Leak from ONGC Pipeline Damages Farmland in Nazira
A crude oil leak from a damaged ONGC pipeline has caused widespread damage to agricultural lands in the Amkotia area of Mesagarh under Nazira circle in Assam’s Sivasagar district, sparking concern among local residents and farmers.
According to reports, the leak began nearly a month ago and continued for several weeks before the pipeline was repaired. During this period, toxic crude oil reportedly flowed into farmlands, affecting nearly 1,000 bighas of cultivable land.
Local farmers have expressed deep concern over the impact, especially as the region is in the middle of the cultivation season. “We are worried. This is the main time for farming, and now our fields are contaminated,” a farmer said.
Residents allege that despite the significant loss, ONGC has not provided any compensation to those affected by the incident. The situation has left many farming families in distress, with no clarity on how or when the damage will be addressed.
In addition to the damage to farmland, locals claim that livestock in the area have fallen ill, and several domestic animals, including poultry and dogs, have died under unexplained circumstances. Some villagers have also reported symptoms of skin-related ailments and have complained about the persistent odor of crude oil in the air.
Villagers are now demanding accountability from ONGC and immediate relief for those affected.
As of now, there has been no official response from ONGC regarding the incident.
