The Sarbananda Sonowal government had asked for Rupees 5 Thousand 38 crores from the Central government in connection to Assam floods in 2016, but no central aid was provided. In 2014, the Centre had promised a sum of Rupees 9370 crores to Assam for the chronic Assam floods, but not a single rupee of that amount was provided.
This was asserted by President of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Ripun Bora in a press conference today. Without mincing words, he further said that the BJP government was not serious about solving the problem of Assam floods.
Saying that Congress doesn't play politics over Assam floods, Bora launched a volley of verbal attacks on BJP by accusing the latter of not keeping its word regarding Assam floods even though the matter was mentioned in BJP's vision document.
Taking potshots at CM Sarbananda Sonowal, he questioned the logic behind dubbing Sonowal as "the hero of the Assamese community" when he couldn't bring any financial aid from the Centre for the Assam floods.
Bora further said that Centre hasn't provided any amount in the name of flood management to Assam between 2014 and 2018. He added that this was revealed by Assam State Disaster Management Authority in response to filing of RTI.
