CM Sonowal announces Rs 100 crore relief package for flood-affected Barak Valley

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has announced a Rs 100 crore relief package for the rehabilitation of people in the three flood-ravaged districts of the Barak Valley; Karimganj, Hailakandi and Cachar.

As per a report by Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), nearly two lakh people are suffering due to the floods across six districts- Dhemaji, Hojai, Lakhimpur, Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi.

ASDMA declared that more than 1.25 lakh people have been affected by the deluge in Karimganj and 27,000 people in Cachar are reeling due to flood and related events. Presently, 394 villages are under-water and over 3,000 hectares of crops have been severely damaged.

The authorities are reportedly running 133 relief camps and distribution centers across four districts, providing shelter to almost 28,000 people.

Sonowal has asked the authorities to reach out to the affected population and extend all possible support and has directed the health department to monitor and deal with any possible outbreak of diseases.

As of now, 24 people have died in the state due to flood related events, including three in landslides.
