An elephant crossing therailway track at Deepor Beel area, about 15km from Guwahati on Friday morning,was hit by a moving train. Though the elephant survived, the incident onceagain brought to the fore the precarious condition of elephants while crossingrailway tracks.
According to reports, the train was travelling at a very slow speed when the accident took place. "The elephant is seriously injured," said a forest official.
This is not the first timean elephant was hit by a train in the area. A number of elephants were knockeddown to death by speeding trains at Deepor Beel area. Elephants frequentlycross the tracks to reach the Deepor Beel wetland.
