Deplorable condition of first Assamese film studio

The Jyoti Udyan at the Bholaguri Tea Garden,Gohpur, is in a bad condition due to the negligence of the authorities. This is the site where Jyotiprasad Agarwala had set up a studio to shoot all his indoor scenes for Joymoti (1935).

Agarwala had arranged all the accommodation personally and had also set up a film laboratory here. The film was released on March 10, 1935, – thus going down in history as the first Assamese film.

In the memory of Jyotiprasad Agarwala, the State Government had built the Jyoti Udyan. But it's a sad fact that the garden has not been well-maintained.

The people who visit this park are appalled to see the condition of this historical park. Every year, flood also causes havoc in the area. The walls around the park have also come down.

This park was the best family garden in the Gohpur Subdivision and people would especially come here on the birth and death anniversary of Jyotiprasad Agarwala, to pay their respects.

It wouldn't be wrong to call Bholaguri Park the site of the first Assamese movie industry. Being such a historically significant spot, its maintenance should be given due importance by the civic authorities and the State Government.

People around the State and the region must be made aware of this spot, as it holds immense cultural and cinematic significance.
