Dhing Land Mafia Accused of Grabbing, Reselling Govt Plots
At a time when eviction drives are being carried out across Assam to free encroached government land, shocking reports of large-scale illegal land occupation and extortion have emerged from Dhing’s Udhantal area in Nagaon district.
According to local residents, a group of four individuals, identified as Giyas Uddin, Fakrul Islam, Rafiqul Islam, and Sadikul, have allegedly seized hundreds of bighas of government land in the region, creating an atmosphere of fear and terror.
It has been alleged that these individuals, locally referred to as "matabbars" (strongmen), have forcefully grabbed government land and sold plots at exorbitant rates, reportedly selling as much as 10 bighas for ₹5 lakh. Even after selling the land, they allegedly reclaimed it by force, threatening and assaulting the buyers, many of whom are poor farmers.
Victims Ismail Uddin and Ishaq Ali, both small-scale farmers, have accused the group of extorting illegal 'goonda tax' and physically assaulting them for refusing to pay. Their complaints have been submitted to both the Dhing Police Station and the Dumdumia Police Outpost, but no action has reportedly been taken so far.
The alleged land mafia’s grip over Udhantal comes at a time when the Assam government has intensified its crackdown on illegal encroachments across the state. The contrast between the administration’s strong stance elsewhere and the apparent inaction in this case has raised serious concerns.
Locals have demanded immediate intervention from the district administration and police to restore justice and safeguard government land from such unlawful occupation.
