The body, which was recovered from a secluded area near Diphlu, was originally identified by family members as that of 17-year-old Pinki Das of West Dighaldari in Nagaon's Raha. Acting on the family's identification, the girl was cremated in the presence of relatives and locals. However, the narrative took a sharp twist when, days later, Nagaon police rescued Pinki Das alive from Guwahati’s Gorchuk area, where she had reportedly been staying under suspicious circumstances.

The revelation sparked public anger and raised serious concerns over police investigation procedures and the ease with which a case of mistaken identity had occurred. In the wake of this, Nagaon police intensified their probe and successfully identified the actual victim as a minor hailing from Langhing in Karbi Anglong.

According to officials, Pinki Das had reportedly travelled with a truck driver named Rahul Singh, a resident of Uttar Pradesh. Both Singh and another suspect were later detained and brought to Nagaon Sadar Police Station for interrogation. Pinki Das was also brought to Nagaon for questioning and was produced before a local court on Thursday, following which she was handed over to her father.

Thereafter, the Nagaon Superintendent of Police has stated that five individuals have been arrested so far in connection with the case. A fresh FIR had been lodged in the murder of the unidentified minor, and police have assured that the true circumstances behind the death will come to light after a comprehensive investigation.

Key Developments:

  • Body found on June 16 in Diphlu is not that of Pinki Das.

  • Deceased identified as a minor from Langhing, Karbi Anglong.

  • Pinki Das was rescued alive from Guwahati after nearly a week of being reported dead.

  • Pinki had been travelling with truck driver Rahul Singh from Uttar Pradesh.

  • Five arrests made so far in connection with the case.

  • A fresh murder case was registered and further investigation is underway.

The case has exposed glaring lapses in early investigation and sparked renewed calls for more rigorous identity verification in cases of unnatural death. Police have said that every angle is being probed, and forensic reports along with phone records will play a key role in unraveling the truth behind the gruesome killing.

As the district waits for answers, the incident has sent shockwaves through both Nagaon and Karbi Anglong, where the victim's identity and the mystery surrounding her death have become central to public discourse.
