Effigy Of BJP Prez Burnt As AASU Protests Against CAA

The All Assam Student's Union (AASU) on Wednesday staged a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) by burning an effigy of BJP National President J P Nadda in Jorhat.

On Monday, the BJP president said that the implementation of CAA was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and asserted that the act will be enforced in the country very soon.

"Due to Covid-19 pandemic, the implementation of CAA was delayed. However, as the overall situation is improving slowly, rules are now being framed. CAA will be implemented very soon and all of you will get the benefits of the law. We are committed to it," Nadda said while addressing party workers in Siliguri.

According to reports, the effigy of J P Nadda was burnt in front of the Deputy Commissioner's (DC) office as a protest against Nadda's statement on CAA.

The protests, which broke out in early December last year in major parts of the state, were suspended due to the restrictions imposed to curb the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. At least four youths were killed in alleged police firing during the protests.

In February this year, apart from protests in other parts, Dibrugarh too saw a huge rally with thousands gathered at a local school compound. Shops, banks and business establishments remained closed that day.

It may be mentioned that AASU and the opposition have been at the forefront of these protests since last year when the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) was announced by Centre.
