Flyovers for Cities, Broken Roads for Villages: Gaurav Gogoi Attacks BJP
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) chief Gaurav Gogoi, chaired a key review meeting at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati on Wednesday to assess poll preparedness for the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) elections. The meeting was attended by 32 appointed observers, focusing on all 40 council constituencies within the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
In a scathing critique of the BJP-led Assam government, Gogoi accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of neglecting rural Assam, particularly the BTR, while concentrating on high-profile infrastructure projects in Guwahati. He alleged that the Chief Minister has become synonymous with flyovers while basic rural infrastructure remains in shambles.
“Udalguri’s roads are broken, wooden bridges have been washed away, and yet the CM takes pride in building flyovers in Guwahati. If roads are built in villages, only then will people feel connected to this government,” said Gogoi, addressing party workers and observers.
Gogoi further claimed that BTR’s development has come to a standstill under the current government. He alleged that former BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary continues to exert influence over the region, “remotely controlling” affairs while the Chief Minister turns a blind eye.
Congress Gears Up at the Grassroots
Revealing that a 70–80-member observer team has been constituted, Gogoi emphasized that the Congress party’s strategy would be rooted in grassroots mobilization. He instructed that election planning should begin not from conference halls in Dispur but from the courtyards of village-level workers across BTR.
“Our aim is simple — not a single Congress worker should sit idle. Every district, not just BTR, must see the revival of the party's organizational strength,” he stated.
He said local feedback from booth-level workers would play a key role in candidate selection and campaign strategies. “The people of BTR are looking for an alternative, and Congress is ready with its candidates,” Gogoi asserted.
BJP ‘Afraid’ of Congress Momentum, Claims Gogoi
During the interaction, Gogoi alleged that the BJP was rattled by the Congress’s recent two-day outreach in tribal belts, where he claimed to have received overwhelming support.
“Tribal people welcomed me with open arms, they gave me oil massages and sat with me for deep discussions. Their warmth shows the winds of change are blowing,” he added.
Sharp Jabs at CM and Big Corporates
Gogoi didn’t mince words when accusing the state government of serving corporate interests.
“To secure his CM chair, Himanta Biswa Sarma is ready to hand over Assam’s land to Adani and Ambani,” he alleged, adding that this trend of appeasing big business at the cost of common people would be challenged strongly.
He also raised concerns that former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s return to state politics could unsettle the current leadership, a possibility the Congress is closely watching.
Evictions Termed ‘Inhuman’
Referring to recent eviction drives across Assam, Gogoi slammed the state administration for what he described as “inhuman actions” that disproportionately affect indigenous and tribal communities.
He reaffirmed Congress’s commitment to fighting these policies and said that his team would soon return to Karbi Anglong for further engagement with tribal voters and local leaders.
