IPFT leaders quit BJP, to support Congress

The BJP had released its manifesto named 'Sankalp Patra' on Monday, which had sparked controversy row in Northeast, as one of the key points of the manifesto is the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

Post the manifesto release, the vice-president of IPFT Ananta Debbarma, had resigned. It may be noted that IPFT is the party's alliance partner in Tripura.

Debbarma along with few of his supporters declared their decision of supporting the Congress for the two Lok Sabha seats in the state in a press conference held on Monday. Tripura Congress chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya Deb Barman was also present in the press conference.

The leader informed that he would soon form a new party along with 11 more sub-divisional level leaders of IPFT as well as leaders of minority groups, as he expressed that he could "no longer remain with the IPFT" as the party along with its alliance partner was "not committed to the cause of Twipraland and protecting the interests of the indigenous tribal people of the state".

"However, at present, we are going to support the Congress candidates," Debbarma added.

It may be noted that the General Secretary of IPFT's youth wing Naotia Sukla also joined the Congress prior to the Lok Sabha Elections and post the release of BJP's manifetso.
