Justice Ashutosh Kumar Sworn In as Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court
Justice Ashutosh Kumar was on Monday sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in a solemn ceremony held at the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati.
Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office to Justice Kumar, who officially assumed charge as the head of the northeastern region’s premier judicial institution. The ceremony was attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, senior judges, top officials of the judiciary, and dignitaries from the legal and administrative fraternity.
Born on October 1, 1966, Justice Ashutosh Kumar completed his schooling at St. Michael’s High School, Patna, and later graduated from the prestigious St. Stephen’s College under Delhi University. He pursued his law degree (LLB) from the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University.
Justice Kumar was enrolled as an advocate on July 9, 1991, in the Patna High Court. Over the course of his legal practice, he appeared in several high-profile criminal cases, including those involving death row convicts. He also briefly served as a Government Pleader for the State of Bihar.
He was elevated as a judge of the Patna High Court on May 15, 2014. Shortly thereafter, he was transferred to the Delhi High Court on January 7, 2015, before being repatriated to the Patna High Court on November 24, 2015.
With his swearing-in today, Justice Kumar takes charge of the Gauhati High Court, which has jurisdiction over Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh.
