The carcass of a leopard was discovered on Thursday morning from a drain at Gabhoru Tea Estate in Mariani.

The locals spotted the carcass in the morning and they immediately informed the forest department officials.

Forest officials and locals brought the carcass out of the drain.

Speaking to reporters a forest official said that the cause of death of the feline is yet to be ascertained and the veterinary doctors at Meleng will only confirm it after proper investigation.

"The dead leopard might have been 6-7 year old and must have ventured out from the wild in search of food and water," the official added.

Meanwhile, a local while talking to the locals said, "Previously also we have witnessed leopard's death in the area. We suspect that someone might have poisoned this leopard. If these unabated killings of leopards and other wild animals continue, then we may not be left with any leopard in the future. Leopards have already reached the verge of extinction."
