Lurinjyoti Gogoi Hits Out at CM, Demands Probe Into Garukhuti Cattle Scam
Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi launched a scathing attack on Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing them of undermining democratic governance, intimidating the press, and fostering corruption under the guise of development.
Speaking at a public event, Gogoi alleged that Jayanta Malla Baruah functions merely as the "transcriber" of the Chief Minister’s will. "Whatever the Chief Minister says at night, Jayanta Malla Baruah echoes it by morning. He doesn’t speak his own mind; he parrots orders," Gogoi said.
He further accused the Chief Minister of cultivating a political culture that actively encourages attacks on the media. “When the Chief Minister himself insults a journalist by calling them a ‘lowly person’, it sets a dangerous precedent for press freedom. This is not just condemnable, it is disgraceful,” Gogoi stated, drawing sharp attention to rising hostility against the press in Assam.
Raising concerns over alleged irregularities in the Garukhuti agricultural project, Gogoi demanded a high-level probe into the disappearance of cattle from the site. “Where have the Garukhuti cows gone? We need a thorough investigation. The people of Assam deserve to know,” he said.
Gogoi also called for an inquiry into reports that individuals close to the Chief Minister were involved in cattle theft. “When you are close to the Chief Minister, anything becomes possible, even theft,” he alleged.
He cited examples of blatant nepotism in recruitment, claiming that even elderly individuals from the Chief Minister’s own constituency have secured government jobs. “This is governance based on personal will, not the rule of law,” Gogoi declared.
Calling for united resistance, the AJP leader urged people across Assam to stand firmly against what he described as the Chief Minister’s authoritarian regime. “This cannot go on unchecked. We need a powerful, collective protest to reclaim democratic values in Assam,” Gogoi concluded.
