Mamata Banerjee lashes out at the NRC draft, calls it “politics ahead of the 2019 elections”

Latest in the long list of inflammatory reactions from the Opposition regarding the publication of NRC in Assam are West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's remarks on the matter.

The West Bengal CM was quick to react to the perceived faults in the publication of the NRC, questioning the lack of transparency of the process and calling it "politics ahead of the 2019 elections". CM Banerjee said that the state government had tried to get in touch with the Home Ministry and the other departments, but there was no response.

Banerjee accused the government of trying to do forceful eviction as people were removed from the list on the basis of surnames and were not included even if they possessed a valid Aadhar card and a Passport. She also stated that Bharatiya Janata Party's divide and rule policy has been exposed and she would soon meet the Home Minister to discuss the issue.

CM Banerjee has also alleged that people who were left out from the NRC draft list were mostly Bengalis, defending them by saying that Bengalis living in Assam are Indians, not Rohingyas. "It is a case of politics isolation. These people have Aadhar cards but the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is still not satisfied," she said.

The opposition parties have also raised their voices over the National Register of Citizens in Assam and called it "inhuman". The NRC draft list was published on Monday at 10 am, with 2.89 crore names published out of 3.29 crore applicants, leaving out 40 lakh people from the list.
