One 50-year-old man from a remote Manipur village in Pherzawl district bordering Mizoram, lost his life after rescuing a girl from drowning in the Barak river, as per local village authorities.

The incident occurred on Sunday morning at 8 when Lalnghetlien, from Tieulien village, located 364 km from the state capital, saw an 8 year old girl, crying for help after falling from a motor boat in the swollen Barak River, Tieulien village authority chairman L. Ramhnai told Pratidin Time.

Lalnghetlien, a farmer, was returning home from the church after Sunday morning prayer, and immediately plunged into the river, when he saw the girl struggling for her life.

He pulled back the girl to the river bank to safety, he said. However, the current was too strong for him and the man could not make it, said the Village Chairman, adding there was heavy downpour on Saturday night which had swollen up the river.

The victim's body was later fished out an hour later by a search party of the village.

Lalnghetlien is survived by his differently abled wife and three children aged between 4 and 8.
