A devastating fire broke out in Tingrai Market near Digboi late Wednesday, reducing at least four shops to ashes. The blaze, which started in one shop, quickly spread to adjacent establishments, creating panic among local residents and business owners.
Despite the arrival of a fire engine from the local fire station, the situation worsened as the fire tender reportedly ran out of water mid-operation, leaving the flames to spread unchecked for a crucial period.
According to eyewitnesses, calls were made to Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) seeking additional firefighting support. However, locals alleged that IOC declined to send its fire tender, sparking anger and frustration among the locals.
“When we contacted IOCL, they said a formality needed to be completed before they could send a fire tender. But they shouldn’t forget — they get their water supply from this very locality,” said a local.
While no casualties have been reported so far, the financial losses are expected to be substantial, as several small businesses were entirely gutted.
