The Assam Cabinet on Sunday approved the formation of a Rabha Development Council, aimed at addressing the needs and concerns of Rabha communities living outside the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC).
Addressing a press conference after the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said:
“We had earlier announced that a development council would be formed for Rabha people who reside outside the jurisdiction of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council. Today, the Cabinet has given its formal approval to this plan. The Rabha Development Council will work exclusively for the welfare of these communities.”
Why It Matters
While the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council already exists to cater to the socio-economic and cultural development of Rabha people within designated areas, thousands of Rabha individuals and families living outside its geographical scope have long felt excluded from institutional support mechanisms.
The newly approved Rabha Development Council seeks to bridge that gap by offering tailored developmental schemes, cultural preservation initiatives, educational support, and economic empowerment for Rabhas living in non-RHAC areas.
