NRC: AAMSU Files Petition In SC

The All Assam Minority Students' Union (AAMSU) has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court demanding appeal of National Register of Citizens' (NRC).

AAMSU stated that the names of those which will not appear in the final NRC to be published on July 31, they can appeal before the concerned Foreigners' Tribunal. AAMSU has filed the writ petition in the apex court praying for modifications of certain provisions of amendment of Foreigners' Tribunal order, 1964.

Earlier, there were 60 days for claims and objections of those whose names were not published in the draft list and the time limit in the claims and objections at Foreigners' Tribunals was 60 days.

The Centre through a gazette notification said that how one can apply for an appeal, the time limit for the appeal and how will the hearing of the appeal took place according to Section 3 (A) of the Foreigners' Tribunal order, 1964. But it has been found that some of the rules and regulations are wrong and therefore it has been asked to notify with fresh circular.

The AAMSU, therefore, asked for a clear notice and opposed the hearing in the FT. AAMSU filed the petition seeking the court's instruction to modify certain provisions of amendment of Foreigners' Tribunal order, 1964.

Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, however, accepted the petition of AAMSU and issued a notice to the state and central government in this regard.

The court alsoasked both the Centre and the State governments to reply to the notice within 4weeks.
