NRC Hearing: CJI Gogoi signs off

Aftermore than six years of twists and turns, Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi,on Friday signed off from the NRC case, by introducing his successor Justice SABobde to the case.

Onthe next day of hearing in the case on November 26, neither CJI Ranjan Gogoinor Assam NRC State coordinator, Prateek Hajela will be present; as CJI Gogoiwill retire from the office on November 17. Moreover, the Supreme Court bench whilehearing the case on Friday ordered the Centre to transfer Hajela to MadhyaPradesh on deputation within seven days.

Hence,the new CJI and a new State Coordinator of NRC will carry forward the process.

CJI Gogoi, who has been shepherding the case since August 2013, today headed a three-member bench of the apex court instead of a conventional two-member bench and introduced Justice SA Bobde to the case. Earlier, the bench comprised of CJI Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Rohinton Nariman. Later in the day, Gogoi recommended the name of Justice SA Bobde as the next Chief Justice of India.

It may be mentioned here that CJI Gogoi has supervised the NRC process till the final list was published on August 31, 2019.
